Training

The Dispute Mediation Service offers a variety of educational and training programs to the community and its volunteers.

 

DMS Volunteer Mediator In-Service

June 10, 2008 – Mediator’s Inservice Training titled “WIIFM: What’s In It For Me, The Value of being a Volunteer Mediator,” 5:30 PM-7:30 PM, Center for Community Cooperation

40-Hour Basic Mediation Training

40-Hour Basic Mediation Training is offered annually and is designed to give people the skills needed to serve as neutral, third party mediators. This training includes lecturing and reading as well as skills demonstrations and active participation in role-plays by the trainees. It meets the standards of the Chapter 154 Texas Civil Practices and Remedies Code and The Texas Mediation Trainers Roundtable.

Dispute Mediation Service (DMS) will offer the following 40 hour basic mediation training during 2008:

30-Hour Family Mediation

30-Hour Family Mediation Training is offered annually and meets the statutory requirements of the Chapter 154 Texas Civil Practices and Remedies Code, Texas Civil Practices and Remedies Code and The Texas Mediation Trainers Roundtable.

April 25, 26 and May 2, 3, 2008, 8:00 – 5:00 at Center for Community Cooperation, LaCrisia “Cris” Gilbert, MDR, DMS Executive Director, experienced trainer, educator, and mediator is lead trainer, (final day at DMS)

Practicum Program

Practicum Program is offered to bridge the gap between classroom training and real mediations. This programs gives newly trained mediators an opportunity to gain hands-on mediation experience. The accepted practicum trainees with participate as observers, co-mediators, and mediators, under the direction of an experienced mediator. A debriefing will be held after each mediation in which the trainee can ask questions and will be critiqued by an experienced mediator or a DMS staff member. Practicum mediations are scheduled individually with each trainee.

Continuing Education Opportunities

Continuing Education Opportunities in mediation skills is offered jointly by DMS and ACR on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except June, July, August, and December. Meetings are held at the Center for Community Cooperation, 2900 Live Oak St., Dallas, Texas from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. One hour of in-service credit is counted toward DMS' ten (10) hours per year in-service requirement.

Continuing Education is conducted regularly to meet DMS clientele's specific ADR needs. Training modules can be tailor-made for your agency or organization. Subject matters may include employee/employer issues, peer issues, community issues, church issues, facilitated meetings, active listening skills, consensus building, how ADR can help in business, and MORE.
